Cleaning and maintaining your stone floors

Updated: Mar 12, 2023

How do you clean your natural stone safely and effectively? Follow these easy steps.

  1. Sweep or vacuum using the hard floor setting to remove dust and dirt particles that may scratch your stone. A dust mop is great for use on polished or honed surfaces. Use a soft brush on rough surfaces. Be careful not to drag furniture across the floor, always get someone to help you move it and use protective pads underneath it.

  2. Gently scrub or mop the floors with warm water and a small amount of dishwashing detergent. Every so often, a dash of methylated spirits can be added to the water instead. This has antibacterial properties and will help to minimise streaking. Always use non-acidic neutral cleaning agents.

  3. To keep your floors looking their best we recommend having a professional clean the tiles every 2 years and reseal them every 4-5 years for indoor tiles and 2 years for outdoor tiles. If you have deep scratches or cracks in your tiles call us for free specialised advice.
